Israeli mezzo-soprano GAL KOHAV is a member of the Israeli Opera's Meitar Opera Studio. In their 21/22 season, Kohav will sing the role of Mother Goose in Stravinsky's The Rake's ProgressZerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni as well as Cenerentola in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Hansel in Humperdinck’s Hansel und Gretel, Papagena in Mozart’s Die Zauberflote in the community productions. 

 

Kohav’s past roles include Cavalier Ramiro in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera (Maryland Opera Studio), the title role in Handel’s Amadigi (Opera UCLA), Opera Box Ghost in Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles (Chautauqua Opera Company), Constance Fletcher in Thompson’s The Mother of Us All (Opera UCLA), the title role in Handel’s Ariodante (cover with Maryland Opera Studio), and Dog in Janáček's The Cunning Little Vixen (cover with Maryland Opera Studio). Kohav also performed the alto solos in Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky Cantata and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor with the UCLA Philharmonia.

 

An enthusiastic advocate of new music, Kohav has created numerous leading roles with Opera UCLA: Julek in the world premiere of Janice Hamer’s Lost Childhood, the title role in the workshop premiere of Carla Lucero’s Juana, and Satan in the workshop premiere of Michel Klein’s, Akeidah.

 

Kohav was a second-place winner of the 2018 Hershey Felder Competition and first-place recipient of the Saddleback Concerto Competition, the Music Teachers' Association of California, the OCC Anniversary Scholarship, and the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity Competition (Orange County Chapter). Kohav received the Keren Ronen scholarship (2022). 

 

Kohav holds a Master of Music in Opera Performance from the Maryland Opera Studio at the University of Maryland, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance from the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA.
